If you flip through the phone book, you’ll find a lot
of companies that are eager to install your Home Theater or
Security System. But which ones have the skills and experience
needed to do it right? And which ones are trustworthy enough
to be allowed to enter your home?
At InControl, we pride ourselves on being better than our competitors
– but don’t just take our word for it. Feel free
to interview a few installers and see why InControl is clearly
the best installer around. We’re so confident that you’ll
choose us, that we make it easy for you to analyze the competition
by providing this handy list of things to consider when selecting
an installer.

- Know What You Want – It’s important for you
to know what you want before you start calling installation
companies. Otherwise they might talk you into getting a
system that doesn’t really meet your needs or one
that goes far beyond your budget.
- Ask for Referrals – As with other service providers,
the best way to find a good installer is to ask for referrals
from people whom you trust. If you’re already working
with an architect, builder, or contractor, ask whether they’ve
worked with good home technology installers in the past.
Likewise, if you have a friend, relative, or colleague who
recently went through an installation, ask which company
they used and whether they were pleased with the results.
If you don’t have anyone to talk to, look for online
reviews of installers.

- Request an Interview – Speaking
with someone over the phone is no substitute for having
a face-to-face meeting. Request an interview with potential
installers and assess their professionalism and preparedness.
Is the installer knowledgeable, courteous, and friendly?
Is he or she able to answer your questions, or are you left
wanting to know more?
- Do Your Research – Have a list of
questions ready. You need to find out how much experience
the installer has and in which specialties. You’ll
also want to know whether the installer works alone or with
a small team. Once you’ve told potential installers
a little bit about your project, ask them for their ideas
and a description of similar work that they’ve done
in the past. If the installer seems to be searching for
answers, you should probably look elsewhere.
- Answer the Questions – A good, prepared
installer should have questions for you, too. He or she
will want to know what kind of home theater or security
system you plan to install, and where. The installer should
ask a lot of questions to try to understand your goals for
functionality and design.
Analyze the Proposal – Before laying a finger on your
home, the installer should present you with a detailed proposal
or blueprint that shows exactly what he or she plans to
do and how much it will cost. Go over this in detail, because
it will be much easier to make changes now (on paper) than
later (once the work has begun). If the installer isn’t
willing to share his or her plans with you, then look for
another installer.
- Trust Your Instincts – Last but
not least, trust your instincts. If you feel uncomfortable,
or if you just don’t “click” with an installer,
you should probably look elsewhere. The installer will be
spending significant time in your home, so you want to make
sure that he or she is trustworthy and reliable. Remember
that you’re looking for a service provider not only
for the installation, but also for maintenance and upgrades
for years to come.
